Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is the second Game Pass title to break into the Most Played Steam rankings. Like the Oblivion Remake, the game is built atop the Unreal Engine 5 using Lumen, Nanite, Niagara, and Virtual Shadows. Fortunately, it performs better than most UE5 games using these technologies. We explored the graphics options in our optimization guide. This one covers its performance on budget PCs.
Windows/System Settings to Optimize
- Enable Resizable BAR.
- Turn on Game Mode.
- Enable Hardware-accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS) and Windowed Optimizations.
- Use the Windows “High Performance” power profile and set your GPU power management mode to the same.
- Disable Memory Integrity. Windows Menu->VBS->Device Security.
- Ensure you use the proper XMP/EXPO memory profile (if available).
- Overclock your GPU if you’re narrowly missing the 60 FPS mark.
- Here’s a guide with more detailed instructions.

Expedition 33: Low-end Benchmarks
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 performs better than most Unreal Engine 5 titles. The drawback is the relatively low global illumination resolution, which tends to produce blurry ambient shadows. The GeForce RTX 3060 averages around 60 FPS using the Epic quality preset (shadows set to “High”) at 1080p.

We used DLSS upscaling in balanced mode with the DLSS 4 override enabled. The resulting gameplay was mostly stutter-free with 1% lows of over 50 FPS. Gamers playing on a Radeon RX 6000 or RX 7000 series GPU should lower the effects and global illumination quality a notch for the best performance. If that fails to help, lower the shadow quality to medium.
VRAM Usage & CPU Bottlenecks
Expedition 33 used up to 6 GB of graphics memory with the above quality settings at 1080p. The main memory consumption didn’t exceed 3 GB, and the game was completely GPU-bound. The graphics card’s power consumption peaked at 160W with the thermals hovering below 70C.
